Background: Blue skies and white clouds have cultivated Tibetan herdsmen for generations. Shrugged white snow peaks, vast plateaus and pastures have endowed the place with a unique romantic feeling, mystery and temptation.

As the summit of thousands of mountains and source of water, Tibet, “the roof of the world,” is a high incidence area of various eye diseases in China owing to its special geographical environment and natural conditions. According to investigations and statistics, the blindness rate in Tibet is as high as 1.4%, and half of that is caused by cataracts. At present, Tibet ophthalmology diagnosis technology lags behind, severely restraining the recovery of Tibetans’ eye diseases.

Love in Nyingchi

On March 27, 2014, a volunteer team consisting of more than 20 famous domestic ophthalmologists from 15 hospitals came to the picturesque Nyingchi known as the “Jiangnan of Tibet”. Their purpose of the trip was to implement cataract surgery for free for 22 local Tibetan cataract patients, and offer free diagnosis service to almost a thousand Tibetan compatriots. Doctors in the volunteer team came to Tibet at their own expense by carrying medicines, operative instruments and consumables worth RMB 200,000. They carried operative equipment and ophthalmic testing devices worth almost RMB 1 million around the country to guarantee that high-quality operations and volunteer diagnosis can be carried out.

As one of the enterprises participating in the activity, Shenyang Sinqi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. donated medicines worth over RMB 100,000 to the volunteer diagnosis welfare activity and dispatched representatives to assist the activity in Nyingchi together with the volunteer diagnosis team.

Brightness in Nyingchi

“Send brightness to people in Nyingchi”, the activity was launched by Chen Jili (pen name: Liu Yedao), Ophthalmology Director of the Shanghai Shibei Hospital, Member of the Chinese Ophthalmologist Association Photography Sub-committee and Special Photographer of Tibet Geographic.

It’s said that doctor Chen Jili started to shoot abundant snow mountains and peach blossoms in Nyingchi from 2006, arousing many people’s sympathy. During the photography process, he discovered that a lot of Tibetans went blind because of cataracts, and mailed eye medicines to Tibetans to treat eye diseases many times. However, individual power was so limited. In this year’s Nyingchi Peach Festival, he appealed to experts from the Chinese Ophthalmologist Association’s Photography Sub-committee to carry out a large-scale public welfare activity called “Love in Nyingchi – Send Brightness to Cataract Patients in Nyingchi”.

Sinqi in Nyingchi

Sinqi staff’s notes:

1. As Nyingchi is located in the Tibet Plateau’s hinterland, many people fell ill because of altitude sickness in Nyingchi. Zhang Mingzhi, Dean of the Shantou University Eye Center, planned to arrive in Lhasa from Shanghai one day before the activity. However, due to the weather, he was delayed in Chengdu and arrived in Lhasa only one hour before the activity on the second day. In order not to delay the smooth conduction of the activity, she hosted the opening ceremony and trained on-site Tibetan doctors for two hours without regard for her sickness.

2. Qiao Tong, Ophthalmology Director of the Children’s Hospital of Shanghai, immediately took a Tibetan child and a sanitation worker to be checked in a Tibet hospital and agreed to do operations for them for free after seeing their strabismus problems during his volunteer diagnosis activity. Two people got on their knees after hearing the news and the operations turned out to be very successful.

3. During the volunteer diagnosis in Nyingchi, the activity site was very spectacular. Due to many participating patients and relatives, the site even got out of control. Local government had to arrange policies to maintain order onsite. All the experts in the activity made diagnoses and gave treatments patiently. More than 700 patients were treated and 22 cataract operations were finished in a day.

Spread love

- Follow-up subsidy activity during Sinqi’s Tibetan trip

As a national ophthalmic enterprise, Sinqi always insists on fulfilling its historical mission as a national enterprise and enterprise spirit of industrial return. All the leaders and workers in Sinqi attach great importance to every public welfare activity. Both the enterprise and Sinqi Philanthropic Foundation are committed to helping and caring about public welfare recipients and try their best to participate in related activities.

As a national enterprise with a strong enterprise mission sense, Sinqi and Sinqi Philanthropic Foundation not only focus on activities themselves, but also authentically help vulnerable groups and individuals in need of help through activities. They hope that they can gather all the power to let Sinqi shine in love through its public welfare activities in society.

After the Tibet Love Public Welfare Activity, Mr. Newsun, Chairman of Sinqi and Sinqi Philanthropic Foundation continued to follow the eye disease salvation work of Tibetans.

Subsequent subsidy:

1. On April 1, 2014, Chairman Newsun learned that Director Ji from the Tibet People’s Hospital had a patient with a necrotic binoculus retina who needed to be sent to the Eye & Ent Hospital of Fudan University for diagnosis. He positively shouldered the patient’s medical expenses on behalf of the company.

2. On April 3, 2014, Sinqi learned that Labat, a country doctor in a remote mountainous area of Tibet had serious eye diseases. But Labat’s monthly salary was only RMB 300, so he could not afford any treatment. Mr. Newsun donated RMB 10,000 to him on behalf of Sinqi, and appointed Manager Zhao Shuang in the Sichuan Area to assist the patient and his relatives in examination and treatment in the Ophthalmology Department of the West China Hospital, Sichuan University.

By April 22, Zhang Junjun, Director of the Ophthalmology Department and Lu Fang gave the result of the diagnosis. The patient was highly suspected to suffer iritis and uveitis in the whole body, including his eyes, caused by tuberculosis. They suggested that he be examined in the tuberculosis department. If he was confirmed to suffer tuberculosis, he would be hospitalized in the tuberculosis department. If tuberculosis control was excluded or completed, LuFang would confirm the treatment scheme.
